Aspen Ideas Festival - June 30th (full episode)

The United States must rethink its approach to China, says a former national security advisor. Getting it right is crucial not just for America, but for the world. Two scholars contemplate how the nation’s monuments and landmarks tell — and shape — our collective memory and shared future. A champion of the Whole Child approach to education, one that honors the humanity of each teacher and student, sheds light on how new technologies can accelerate students’ learning.

A New Approach to China

  • H.R. McMaster
  • Jeffrey Goldberg

The US approach to China, H. R. McMaster argues, has long been based on the faulty assumption that China will “play by the rules” once integrated into the international political and economic order. Instead, the United States must think empathetically to understand what China really wants — and then plan accordingly. Join McMaster and The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg as they explore a relationship critical to the future of the United States, and the world.

Remembering the Past, Imagining the Future: How the Legacy of Slavery Still Shapes Us

  • Clint Smith
  • Elizabeth Alexander

Martin Luther King Jr. said: “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” As Americans of all backgrounds continue to grapple with the legacy of slavery, its imprint on our lives remains indelible. This conversation brings together two scholars and poets contemplating how the nation’s monuments and landmarks tell — and shape — not only our collective memory, but our shared future. What will it take to learn (and unlearn) from the past in pursuit of a better path forward?

The Path to Stronger Teacher-Student Connections

  • Priscilla Chan
  • Linda Darling-Hammond

Students and teachers have displayed remarkable courage in the face of overlapping traumas this past year. Building on that resilience and the new, innovative ways students and teachers stayed connected throughout the pandemic will be key as students return to school this fall. In this session, Dr. Priscilla Chan, co-founder and co-CEO of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), will join Linda Darling-Hammond, CEO of the Learning Policy Institute, to discuss the importance of a trauma-informed approach to the upcoming school year, as well as new technologies to accelerate students’ learning by fostering the strong, supportive relationships they need to thrive.
