LaWanda Hawkins
Founder, Justice for Murdered Children
LaWanda Hawkins is the founder of Justice for Murdered Children. She started the organization in 1996, following her son’s murder and discovering that many murder cases went unsolved and families were excluded from the criminal justice process. JFMC’s programs include a homicide response team, an annual crime-victim clinic, and a wellness and resource center for families of murder victims. Previously, Hawkins advocated for passage of Proposition 9, the Victim’s Bill of Rights Act of 2008, which expanded crime victims' rights under the California Constitution. In 2015, JFMC was recognized for Outstanding Volunteer Service to Victims of Crime by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
