Field Trip: Wildfire Burn Scar

In recent years, communities across the American west have struggled with larger and more severe wildfires. In 2018, the Lake Christine Fire in Basalt burned three homes and forced the evacuation of thousands. Join the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies’ forest and climate director on a hike through the burn scar. Participants will see the healthy ecological impacts of fire and explore the role that climate change played in the fire’s behavior. Expect to walk about one mile on an uneven dirt trail. Sturdy walking shoes are required. Please bring your reusable water bottle. First come, first served for the first 20 participants.

Join us for a tour of “Charting Space: Herbert Bayer’s World Geo-Graphic Atlas at 70” in the Resnick Gallery of the Doerr-Hosier Center. The installation uses Bayer’s atlas as a springboard to explore current issues and offers interactive elements and multimedia experiences, a highlight of which is a recreation of his “Outside-In Globe,” which allows viewers to step inside and, as Bayer suggested, “consider the world as one.” (First come, first served. Getting Adjusted to the Altitude

Aspen is a walking city situated nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. (See Tips for Getting Adjusted to the Altitude). Cool evenings and afternoon thundershowers are common. Highs can be in the 80s, with lows in the 50s. We recommend layering and bringing a light jacket. Festival attendees dress comfortably, yet professionally. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
