Gretchen Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer is the governor of Michigan, since 2019. A Democrat, she has signed over 1,250 bipartisan bills and five balanced budgets. She is also vice chair of the Democratic National Committee. In 2016, Whitmer was chosen to serve the last six months of the Ingham County prosecutor’s term when the existing one was arrested and charged with crimes. Prior to this, she served in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015, becoming the first woman Senate Democratic Leader in 2011, and in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006. Whitmer’s first experience in civil service was as chair of the East Lansing Transportation Commission from 1999 to 2000. She began her career practicing law at Dickinson Wright.
