Karen McLuskie is deputy director of technology in the United Kingdom government’s Department for Business and Trade. Previously, she was senior emerging-technology advisor in the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, advising on social-technical issues and policy dilemmas prompted by AI as the geopolitics of frontier technologies moved center stage. Prior to this, as head of the first-of-its-kind U.K.-India tech partnership for the British High Commission in India, McLuskie was the first British diplomat with a technology portfolio. Other roles in her 20-year diplomatic career include head of political in the British embassy in Tel Aviv, strategic communications for the Russia department, and deputy head of mission at the British embassy in Tehran. McLuskie also writes and speaks widely about tech policy.
