Alex Filippenko is an astronomy professor and Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences at University of California, Berkeley. An elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, he has produced five astronomy video courses with The Great Courses, co-authored an award-winning astronomy textbook, and appeared in more than 100 television documentaries. Filippenko was the only member of both teams that revealed the accelerating expansion of the universe, a discovery honored with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. Winner of prestigious teaching awards at UC Berkeley, he was named the 2006 National Professor of the Year and awarded the 2004 Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization.
