Carol Christ is chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and its former executive vice chancellor and provost. Since returning to Berkeley in 2016, she has worked to foster community and improve the campus climate, strengthen its financial position, address the campus housing shortage, and celebrate the institution’s commitment to free speech. Christ was previously president of Smith College from 2002 to 2013. Before that, she was a professor of English and an administrator at UC Berkeley for more than three decades, serving as vice chancellor, assistant manager, and provost; provost and dean of the College of Letters and Sciences; and dean of humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences.
