Douglas Lute

Douglas Lute is the former US ambassador to NATO, from 2013 until 2017. He retired as a US Army lieutenant general in 2010 after 35 years. Lute served on the National Security Council under President Obama focusing on South Asia, and under President Bush coordinating the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Previously, he was director of operations (J3) in the Pentagon, overseeing US military operations worldwide. Lute is president of Cambridge Global Advisors and a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. He’s also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the US Institute of Peace Senior Military Advisory Group, and the Atlantic Council of the United States.
