Ivo Daalder is president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He served as the US ambassador to NATO from 2009 to 2013. Prior to that, Daalder was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution and an associate professor at University of Maryland School of Public Policy. From 1995 to 1997, he was director for European affairs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council. Daalder is an author or editor of ten books, including The Empty Throne: America’s Abdication of Global Leadership; In the Shadow of the Oval Office; and America Unbound: The Bush Revolution in Foreign Policy. He is a regular contributor to newspapers’ opinion pages and commentator on international affairs on television and radio.
