James Clyburn is the US representative for South Carolina’s 6th congressional district, serving in his 15th term. He is majority whip, the third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, and chairs the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. First elected in 1993, Clyburn was co-president of his freshman class and has chaired the Congressional Black Caucus and House Democratic Caucus. He champions rural and economic development and supports historic preservation and restoration programs. Prior to his election, Clyburn was human affairs commissioner for the State of South Carolina and the first minority advisor to a South Carolina governor, appointed in 1971. Clyburn’s memoir, Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black, was published in 2015.
