James “Jim” Shelton is president of the Chan Zuckerberg Education Initiative. He was most recently president and chief impact officer of 2U, Inc. Previously, Shelton was a deputy secretary at the US Department of Education and head of its Office of Innovation and Improvement, managing a portfolio that included most of the department’s competitive programs, including i3 and Promise Neighborhoods. He has been program director for education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, East Coast lead for NewSchools Venture Fund, and co-founder of school management company LearnNow. He launched, acquired, and operated education-related businesses with Knowledge Universe Inc. and was a senior manager at McKinsey & Company’s Atlanta office.
