Joseph DeSimone is the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, where he directs Stanford’s Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics Center and is founding faculty director of the Center for STEMM Mentorship. DeSimone is also a co-founder, board member, and former CEO of Carbon, an additive manufacturing company. Previously, he was a professor of chemistry at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. With career breakthroughs in green chemistry, medical devices, nanomedicine, and 3D printing, DeSimone has co-founded several companies based on his research, holds over 230 issued patents, and has mentored 80 students through PhD completion. His honors include the 2020 Harvey Prize in Science and Technology, the 2019 EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the 2016 National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Obama, and the 2019 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award.
