Josiah Ober is Markos and Eleni Kounalakis Chair in Honor of Constantine Mitsotakis in the School of Humanities and Sciences and professor of political science and classics at Stanford University. Senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, he is also founder and director of the Stanford Civics Initiative, a program dedicated to academic freedom and viewpoint diversity. Previously, Ober taught at Princeton and Montana State University. He is the author of eight books, including The Greeks and the Rational: The Discovery of Practical Reason; Demopolis: Democracy Before Liberalism, and The Rise and Fall of Classical Greece. Ober has also published 100 articles and chapters on political theory and ancient Greek history in publications including American Political Science Review, Philosophical Studies, and Polis, among others.
