Matt Pottinger

Matt Pottinger is a principal at Garnaut Global, an open-source research firm with a focus on China. He is also a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution and chair of the China Program at Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Previously, Pottinger was U.S. deputy national security adviser from 2019 to 2021. Prior to that, he was senior director for Asia at the National Security Council, where he led the Trump administration’s work in the Indo-Pacific region and its shift on China policy. Prior to this, Pottinger conducted Asia research at Davidson Kempner Capital Management. Earlier in his career, Pottinger served three combat deployments as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan and was a China-based reporter for Reuters and The Wall Street Journal.
