Nicholas Dirks is president and CEO of the New York Academy of Sciences and a professor of history and anthropology at University of California, Berkeley, where he served as chancellor from 2013 to 2017. A recognized historian and anthropologist, he specializes in the study of South Asia. Previously, Dirks was the executive vice president for the arts and sciences and dean of the faculty at Columbia University. Prior to this, he taught at University of Michigan and California Institute of Technology. Dirks is the author or editor of seven books on the history and anthropology of South Asia and the British empire, as well as themes ranging from social theory to globalization.
