Paul Alivisatos
President, University of Chicago
Paul Alivisatos is president of the University of Chicago, where he chairs the Argonne National Laboratory board of governors and the Fermi Research Alliance board of directors. He was previously executive vice chancellor and provost of University of California, Berkeley, and Samsung distinguished professor of nanoscience and nanotechnology, founding director of the Kavli Energy Nanoscience Institute, and director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. A scientist and entrepreneur with 50 patents, Alivisatos’s research in nanomaterials has been applied as nanocrystals in biological imaging, renewable energy, and QLED TV displays. A National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences member, his honors include the 2021 Priestley Medal, 2020 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award, and 2019 Welch Award in Chemistry.
