Pete Buttigieg is US secretary of transportation. He is the first openly gay person confirmed to serve in a president’s Cabinet. Prior to joining the Biden-Harris administration, Buttigieg was a Democratic candidate for US president. Previously, he served two terms as mayor of his hometown, South Bend, Indiana, where he worked to expand access to technology for all residents and launched the Smart Streets initiative to improve street design in the downtown and West Side areas. Buttigieg also served for seven years as an officer in the US Navy Reserve, taking a leave of absence from the mayor’s office for a deployment to Afghanistan in 2014. He is a graduate of Harvard University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.
