Phil Murphy is governor of New Jersey, since 2018. Previously a diplomat and financier, he co-founded the progressive policy think tank New Start New Jersey in 2014. From 2009 to 2013, Murphy served as US ambassador to Germany. From 2006 to 2009, he was national finance chair of the Democratic National Committee. Murphy worked for over 20 years at Goldman Sachs, leading offices in Frankfurt and Hong Kong and retiring as a management committee member in 2003. A recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award, he has served on the national board of the NAACP, co-chaired a national task force on public education for the Center for American Progress, and chaired the New Jersey Benefits Review Task Force, among others.
