Piper Kerman is the author of the best-selling memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, which chronicles the 13 months she spent in a federal correctional institution on drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Her book, which was adapted into a critically acclaimed Netflix series, explores the intersection of her life with the lives of women she met in prison and raises questions about American criminal justice. Since her release, Kerman has worked to promote prison and criminal justice reform. She serves on the Women’s Prison Association board and speaks widely, including at the White House and before Congress.
