Executive Director, Miami Waterkeeper

Rachel Silverstein is the executive director of Miami Waterkeeper. In this role since 2014, she serves as an investigator, scientist, educator, legal advocate and spokesperson for the organization. Prior to this, Silverstein was a Knauss Sea Grant fellow and staff member of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard. Previously, she studied the effect of climate change on coral reefs. Co-author of 10 peer-reviewed articles, Silverstein’s research has used genetic methods to answer ecological questions. She earned her doctorate in marine biology and fisheries at University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science. Silverstein’s recognition includes being named Florida Wildlife Federation’s 2022 water conservationist of the year and a 2023 Elevate Prize winner.
