Rev. Houston R. Cypress is a Two-Spirit Poet, Artist, Producer, and Environmentalist from the Otter Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. He serves on the Miccosukee Tribe’s Environmental Advisory Committee. Cypress is also the co-founder of Love The Everglades Movement, a full spectrum organization devoted to the development of platforms and initiatives for environmental protection and indigenous solidarity. The Everglades Coalition awarded him their 2022 Grassroots Activism Award. He presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami a lecture entitled “Decolonizing Gender, Land, and Spirit” (2017) and contributed to their Digital Commissions series with his short film “… what endures …” (2021). He co-created a short film, executive produced by Superblue and NOWNESS, entitled “Every Step Is A Prayer” (2021). His recent artist residencies include: Heat Exchange by Bas Fisher Invitational and Rogaland Kunstsenter; Thread Residency by Musagetes Foundation; Oolite Arts Studio Residency with his collaborator Jean Sarmiento. He was honored by O, Miami and The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center with the 2022 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Poetry Award.
