Starn Brothers

Collaborative Artists

Doug Starn and Mike Starn are identical twins and collaborative artists who defy categorization, having combined traditionally separate disciplines such as photography, sculpture, painting and architecture over five decades of work. They first received international attention at the 1987 Whitney Biennial, working conceptually with photography. In 2010, the Starn Brothers inaugurated their series “Big Bambú” on the roof of The Metropolitan Museum Art, where it became the ninth-most-attended exhibit in the museum’s history; it was later shown at the Venice Biennale and five museums internationally. In 2017, they completed a 90-foot-long glass wall façade for the U.S. embassy in Moscow. Major artworks by the Starns are represented in museum collections including MoMA, The Whitney, LACMA, Ordrupgaard Museum (Denmark), Yokohama Museum of Art (Japan) and Moderna Museet (Sweden).
