Steven Cliff is the executive officer of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Appointed by the board in September 2022, he leads nearly 2,000 employees to create and implement programs to reduce air and climate pollution. Cliff has extensive scientific and regulatory experience. He was previously administrator and, before that, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Prior to this, he was deputy executive officer of CARB, where he oversaw its climate program and was appointed by then-governor Jerry Brown to Caltrans as the inaugural assistant director for sustainability. Cliff also led research efforts for nearly 20 years at the University of California, Davis, related to air quality and climate change.
