Read It and Eat: Decoding Food Labels
Setup
Food labeling covers a range of issues important to consumers from personal health and well-being to healthier production systems. Consumers and advocates have been pushing for an assortment of food labels: GMO, organic, worker justice, animal welfare, and nutrition facts, to name a few. Meaningful labels can allow consumers to vote with their dollars to support their values. But in a sea of labels—including confusing ones like “natural,” it’s hard to make sense of which ones really do have value. What are the barriers to making sure labels in the market are meaningful? And what are organizations doing to address this?
