John Torres is a medical contributor at NBC News and an emergency medicine physician. His 32 years in the United States Air Force included active duty as a C-130 pilot and the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve as a flight surgeon, a tour of duty in Iraq and rescue efforts out of the South Pole and in the wakes of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Combining his medical and military experience, Torres helped found training courses for NATO Special Forces soldiers to ensure consistency across nations, languages and cultures. He currently teaches NATO Special Forces skills that include tactical combat casualty care, combat simulations and medical leadership. Torres has made numerous humanitarian trips to Central and South America, providing medical care to children in need. He is the author of “Dr. Disaster’s Guide to Surviving Everything.”
